What This Tool Does

The Interval Trainer helps you develop accurate interval recognition and reproduction through audiation (silent mental singing). The drones provide harmonic context, giving your brain reference points to accurately hear and sing intervals.

How to Practice

Method 1: Audiation (Start Here)

  1. Select your interval (start with Minor 2nd)
  2. Press Play once – let all 8 steps run through automatically
  3. Follow this pattern:
    • Listen (steps 1-2): Hear the interval
    • Audiate (step 3): Silently "sing" it in your mind
    • Listen (step 4): Hear it again
    • Audiate (steps 5-7): Continue mental singing
    • Listen/Check (step 8): Verify your accuracy

This is where the real brain training happens. Audiation strengthens your internal pitch memory.

Method 2: Singing (Once Confident)

Same pattern as Method 1, but sing out loud during the audiation steps instead of silent mental singing. Use the Listen/Check step to verify pitch accuracy.

You can mix methods – audiate some intervals, sing others as you build confidence.

Controls

  • Exercise – Choose interval pattern:
    • Ascending (recommended start)
    • Descending
    • Ascending & Descending
    • Descending & Ascending
  • Starting Note – Sets the pitch where intervals begin (default: C4)
  • Key (Drones) – Sets the harmonic center for the drones
    • Keep "Same as Starting Note" checked for beginners
    • Unlock for advanced practice (intervals not starting on tonic)
  • Interval – Select which interval to practice (Minor 2nd through Perfect 15th)
  • Tempo – Default 120 BPM. Prioritize accuracy over speed. Adjust as needed.
  • Voice Cards – Control volume and timbre for each voice
    • Toggle voices on/off
    • Adjust individual volumes
    • Change sound character (Pad, Articulate, Clean Sine)

Practice Tips

  1. Start with Method 1 (audiation only) for all intervals
  2. Master smaller intervals first (m2, M2, m3, M3) before larger ones
  3. One interval at a time – don't rush to the next until confident
  4. Accuracy over speed – slow down tempo if needed
  5. Use the drones – they're your harmonic map, not distraction
